‘What do you do for a living?’
Turns out more than 70 percent of people hate answering it.
• Because we want to answer with something impressive.
• Because we want others to respect what we do….
• Because we worry how people are going to judge us based on what they hear us say.
I was guilty of it,too!
Years ago, I had an admin job at this Fire & Security company.
It’s not that I hated it, I actually enjoyed it at the time!
I just hated telling people what I did for a living…
Because I was afraid they would think that:
• I’m not capable of doing anything BIG
• I’m not very ambitious
• I’m not someone they would ever like to hang out with
See, years went by and I wish I had known one thing a decade ago:
The power of VALUE that WE bring to other people’s lives by doing what we do.
No matter how unimpressive our job may seem at first!
Now I know because of ME hundreds of people had their fire alarms fixed – and who knows what could have happened if my role didn’t exist?!
And I’m finally proud of that period of my life.
I now do what I’m incredibly proud of.
I stick with what I enjoy and I no longer seek approval from others – it’s pretty darn liberating!
So if you enjoy what you do, but you’re unsure how to justify it to others…
Think about how what YOU do improves someone else’s life.
What would they thank YOU for?
And now tell me…what is it that you do for a living?
Feels good, doesn’t it? ? ??
